I remember sitting in the backyard with my grandfather when I was a kid. It was one of those quiet evenings, and he was fiddling with an old oil lamp. As the sun set and darkness crept in, he lit the lamp and said, “Do you see this light? It’s small, but it pushes back the darkness.”
At the time, it didn’t seem like a big deal—just Grandpa being Grandpa. But as I’ve grown, I’ve realized how powerful that moment was. That little lamp wasn’t just a source of light; it was a reminder. No matter how small or insignificant it may seem, light always stands out in darkness.
It makes me think of Romans 12:2, which says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.”
God calls us to be lights in this world—lights that don’t blend in but shine so brightly that they transform everything around them.
What Kind of Light Are You?
Let me ask you something: Have you ever thought about the different kinds of light in the world? I mean, think about it for a second. Not all lights are created equal, right?
The Oil Lamp: It’s warm and nostalgic but super fragile. A single gust of wind, and it’s out.
The Candle: Brighter than an oil lamp but still vulnerable. It’ll flicker and struggle in a storm.
The Flashlight: Now we’re talking. It cuts through the darkness, but it’s only as good as the batteries powering it. When those batteries die? Game over.
Car Headlights: These are something else. When they come at you with full beams, you can’t ignore them. They’re designed to demand attention and light up everything around them.
So, which one are you? Are you the flickering lamp, barely making a difference? Or are you the headlights that force the world to notice your presence?
Here’s the thing: when you’re truly walking with God, your light changes the atmosphere. People should notice. They should talk differently around you, not because you’re better than them, but because your presence reminds them of a higher standard.
I remember a time when I was in a group where people spoke carelessly—gossiping, swearing, just saying whatever came to mind. At first, I stayed quiet. I didn’t want to be “that person” who seemed holier-than-thou. But you know what happened? My silence dimmed my light. I was just going along with the flow, and it didn’t sit right with me.
That moment was a wake-up call. I realized that being a light isn’t about blending in; it’s about standing out. When you shine for Christ, people should know it. Not because you’re loud or overbearing, but because your life reflects something different—something better.
You can’t shine on your own. Every light needs a source. Oil lamps need oil. Flashlights need batteries. And we? We need God.
Prayer, scripture, worship—these are our fuel. They’re what keep us burning bright. Neglect them, and you’ll flicker and fade. Stay connected, and your light will not only shine but grow brighter.
Think about it: when was the last time you spent real, uninterrupted time with God? Not just a quick prayer or a verse here and there, but a real connection? That’s where the power to shine comes from.
Light isn’t just about being seen; it’s about guiding others. Think of a lighthouse. It doesn’t exist to look pretty; it exists to guide ships to safety and warn them of danger.
Your life can be that lighthouse. Every time you show kindness, every time you stand firm in your faith, every time you choose God over the world, you’re pointing someone toward safety—toward Christ.
I can’t tell you how many times someone else’s light has guided me. A friend who prayed for me when I was struggling. A mentor who shared wisdom when I felt lost. Even a stranger whose kindness reminded me of God’s love. Those moments weren’t accidents; they were lighthouses steering me back to God.
So, What’s Your Glow-Up Plan?
What kind of light do you want to be?
Will you settle for being a flickering candle, or will you aim to be a floodlight that lights up the entire space? Romans 12:2 tells us not to conform to the world but to be transformed. That transformation is what takes us from being a faint glow to a blazing beacon of God’s love and truth.
When you walk into a room, let people feel the shift. Let your light be so undeniable that it makes them pause. Not because of you, but because of the God who shines through you.
You don’t have to be perfect to shine. You just have to be willing. Even the smallest light can drive out darkness. But remember, it’s not just about how bright you shine; it’s about staying connected to the Source and using your light to guide others.
So, the next time you feel like blending in or dimming your light to fit in, remember this: You were made to stand out. Be the light that cannot be hidden—the kind that leaves no doubt you’re walking with God. Let your light shine so brightly that the world has no choice but to see Him in you.
